On Saturday February 9th the club put on it first (of many) member classes this year. Our new club training director, Jimmy Cusic organized a class on basic bowl turning and wrangled our veteran instructor Kevin Bassett to dole out the lesson.
Our club has access to seven full sizes Jet16-42 lathes along with a full kit of gear for each lathe. Each lathe kit comes in a handy tool box which is filled with drive centers, liver center, tool rest, two chucks each with different jaws and keys, a set of calipers, and a task light. Each kit also has a picture based content card so that each student can verify the contents at the beginning and the end of class.
All the students/members need is there tools and personal protection equipment (face-shield, dust mask, etc). Although if they don’t have any equipment the club has a limited supply of tools and PPE for students that require those items.
It looks like each student was successful in completing at least one bowl and perhaps they are great additions to our Empty Bowls project.
The next planned member class will be in mid March and another of our veteran turners, Brian Evan, will teach how to make a box.
