President’s Message December 2023
Happy Holidays to everyone! DAW kicked off the holiday season with our annual Holiday Party. It was a fun event. Good food, an inspiring speaker, followed by a wonderful raffle and auction of pieces created by our talented members. I’m already looking forward to next years party. My good friend and golf buddy , Jennifer Waters showed us the Beads and BoC box from her daughters experience with her battle with Bone Cancer. Hanna began her bought with Bone cancer beginning when she was 7 years old. Each Bead has a special significance, and the string of Beads was impressive and inspiring. Thank you for sharing your story, Jennifer, and Hanna! Lou Boudreaux recently delivered a dozen more BoC boxes to our friends at Children’s Hospital in Dallas. We will be making more BoC box kits for you to make and have some of these available at the January meeting. The children really appreciate these boxes and they are revered for a lifetime. I appreciate the time and effort and spirit of giving shown by our members on our steadfast support of these important community programs.
Your leadership group has had a meeting to plan some of the events for the upcoming new year. First thing is a class on Saturday January 6th. “Greenwood Bowl turning for beginners” to be taught by Kevin Bassett. Tickets will be available on the web site for $35, class will be limited to 7 students. Wood will be provided. It would be great if everyone turned some bowls for “Empty Bowls 2024” our bowls are due February 9th and the event is Thursday evening February 29th. Yes, it’s leap year and we need to leap onto some bowl making for “Empty Bowls” if we are to meet our goal of 250 Bowls. Currently we have approximately 110 bowls on hand. So please remember to bring your Empty Bowls donations to the January meeting.
On January 27th John Holderman will be teaching a class on “Making Segmented Bowls”. This class will be held at the shop of Alain Schwartz as segment cutting will be part of the class. Segmented turning is an incredible way to make just about anything. This class is an introduction into segmented turning. This technique allows large pieces to be made from smaller pieces of wood. In this way scraps and dimensioned lumber can be configured into amazing designs limited only be your imagination. Look for more information on this exciting class coming soon.
Our January Meeting demonstrator is Tana Munoz. She will be demonstrating on using resins in turning. So the DAW new year is already being planned and promises to get us off to a great start on 2024. I wish all my DAW wood turning friends a wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year!
