April 21 – DAW Club Meeting demo by Steve Thomason – Crush Grind Pepper Mill
April 21 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm
In this demonstration we will take the Craft Supplies Crush Grind Pepper Mill mechanism and instructions to take a good pepper mill to a great pepper mill! I recommend everyone download the instructions (crush_grinder.pdf) so they can make the necessary changes as we go along in the demonstration. We will be modifying the drilling and sizing from the basic instructions to give a better fit and finish.
We will be turning an ash blank in the demo I call: Turned, Burned, Dyed, and Enhanced Peppermill. Both of the mills have been turned and burned. The one on the left has been waxed and enhanced. The mill on the right has been lightly turned again and dyed. Both have then been sprayed with lacquer to protect the finish for handling. I will go over both methods of finishing. The run time of the demo is about an hour and twenty minutes.
Steve Thomason’s Bio:
I spent 54 years in Information Technology until I retired. Along the way I was also a professional dog trainer, a licensed humane investigator, and humane society director. I co-founded Gifted Animal Placement (GAP) to rescue dogs from shelters that law enforcement officers needed for drug detection, ordinance detection, search and rescue and cadaver work.
I started woodturning about 9 years ago with pens, handles and other spindle work. However, I quickly realized that I needed more instruction. I joined several woodturning clubs in the area, and received a lot of help. I took classes with Joe Ruminski, Jimmy Clews, Molly Winton, Doug Fisher, Janice Levi, Michael Hosaluk, Rebecca DeGroot, Derek Weidman, Alan Lacer, and Jeff Hornung to name a few! I find that I do enjoy learning new techniques and trying out new (to me!) things.
This is a hybrid meeting – in-person at WoodWorld and on Zoom.
