In this demo Michael will show the burn texturing technique he uses to embellish turned surfaces.

Some textures are burnt in with friction. Michael uses cup burs, The ones he uses the most, are 2 mm, 4 mm, 6.5 mm, 10mm to create a bumpy surface (think lizard skin). These are spun at 35,000 to 40,000 rpm.

Other textures are burned in with Pyrography. Branding irons for lack of a better descriptor, are used to fill in areas or fields.

Fire sanding is using a torch to give texture to turned surfaces which is then colored with gilders paste from Chroma Craft.

Michael Kehs provides instructions for making your own shop made burning pen and also offers a burn texturing set with hand piece and collet reducer, 5 woodburning tips, some extra NiChrome wire and 4 cup burs.
