March 17th – DAW Club Meeting demo by Ron Howe – Hummingbird House
March 17, 2022 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Ron Howe will be presenting the Hummingbird House! A Novelty Decoration with much appeal. Yes a Decoration, as the Humming Bird will not nest in an enclosed space, but we can say “here is an opportunity“. Ron had the privilege of turning these with Jerry Measimer from North Carolina at a retreat in Michigan this last year. Jerry has turned 1,000’s of these and they are featured for sale in the North Carolina State Magazine. Jerry developed a way to fast track and make multiple of these in minimal time. Ron will share all of this with you.
Ron will be turning the body, the top, and hollowing the body. Hollowing made way too easy! Once the body and top are turned multiple options for enhancing will be presented, and demonstrated.
Ron Howe’s Bio:
I bought my first mini lathe in 2011. For the next two and half years the only time I had for turning was
on the weekends. Pens and bottle stoppers were the beginning. That start led me into tops and miniatures
incorporating color, texture and experimenting with shape and form.
August 2016, I retired from the 40 hour a week grind and the world opened up for my passion in
woodturning and creating.
My background in art has been incorporated into my life from the first art class in the seventh grade. I
have been creative with a multitude of techniques and medica including wood. Sand blasted wood signs was a
business for ten years.
My passion in woodturning is on the artistic creative side, incorporating color, texture, pyrography,
piercing and limited carving.
In July 2017 I was introduced to the Dirty Pour paint technique. Working with Ron Campbell and
Rebecca DeGroot, we covered a lot of ground in a short time, experimenting with colors and refining the
technique. I have taken that to the next level, lids for bowls, as well as doing the entire piece as one unit.
Following Gary Lowe and his creation of the Cosmic Cloud, I have ventured into that area. The use of
JoSonja Iridescent Paints lends itself well into my woodturning creations.
Making use of the iridescent paints, I ventured in the String Pull technique for creating flowers. The
String Pull is nothing new as I was introduced to it in the 8 th grade.
Alcohol Dye lends itself into woodturning very well. Since 2017 I have crafted many pieces using dye.
Sharing and teaching is something that I enjoy a great deal. One of my best experiences was
teaching a book club to sketch. All in the group of 25 were old enough to be my mother or grandmother. The
class stretched out over a 12-month period and proudly for me, that led to three accomplished artists.
New and different is a hobby to me. If you don’t want me to do it ‘Don’t make it a challenge’.
It will be different with texture, color, or something else that sets it apart but meets the challenge. That is just
the way I do it.
