Club Meeting – March 2020 – Molly Winton – The Intro to Surface Enhancements

March 19 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
WoodWorld, 13650 TI Blvd, Suite 101
Dallas, TX 75243 United States

The January 2020 demonstration will feature Molly Winton and her unique style of small turnings and surface enhancements. This demonstration will explore the process of where to begin once an individual has decided to enhance their turning beyond the lathe. Two primary goals will be addressed: discussion as to why someone would want to enhance their work, and what should they know prior to beginning; and identification of sources of inspiration within each individual’s own interests and environment, to make their enhancements unique unto themselves. Overcoming an ‘inability to draw’, importance of form, evolution of design, and the value of critiques will also be discussed. Reminder: This is the quarterly challenge month (Platter) and the quarterly raffle.

DAW Member Class – Molly Winton Day 1 – Making Mini Vessels and Surface Enhancements

March 20 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
WoodWorld, 13650 TI Blvd, Suite 101
Dallas, TX 75243 United States

You will learn how to make hollowing tools from hex wrenches and you will turn some small (miniature) items that will be used for embellishing.  Molly will discuss the best woods and turning techniques for embellishing. Miniature vessels are fun and easy to make using tools readily available on the market, and/or using simple homemade hollowing tools. They can be a great way to experiment with unfamiliar or different forms, and provide a quick way to experiment with many different texturing/carving techniques. This demonstration will begin with the making of a miniature vessel (no greater than 2 ½” in diameter and /or height) using a spindle gouge, detail gouge, and homemade Allen wrench hollower. Once off the lathe, various carving and texturing tools will be demonstrated to achieve a variety of surface textures. Tools will include a reciprocating carver, rotary carver, and engraver. The cost is $150.00 per person. To save your slot for this class follow the link to pay and reserve your place.  Look forward to seeing you there... https://squareup.com/store/DallasAreaWoodturners/

DAW Member Class – Molly Winton Day 2 – Pyrography: Effective Use of Home-Made Brands and Commercial Pyrography Pens

March 21 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
WoodWorld, 13650 TI Blvd, Suite 101
Dallas, TX 75243 United States

You will learn how to make your own brands to use with your wood burning tools, how to use the common brands that may come with your wood burning kit.  You will also learn about power carving tools and their usage, designs, patterns and strategies for embellishing your pieces with both pyrography and carving. Pyrography is growing in popularity as a technique to enhance woodturned art. Many different pyrography systems are available on the market today, with a wide variety of commercial pens and tips from which to choose. Many of these will be reviewed and discussed. While there are numerous pyrography pens/tips available on the commercial market,  making unique, one-of-a-kind brands can provide individualized styles of texturing and design that cannot be achieved through the use of commercially made pens. This demonstration will review commercially made products as well as show how brands are made using various materials, and their application on turned vessels. Effective use of pens/tips, and techniques to achieve clean, crisp lines; and layout and design tips will also be covered. The cost is $150.00 per person. To save your slot for this class follow the link to pay and reserve your place.  Look forward to seeing you there... https://squareup.com/store/DallasAreaWoodturners/
