Club Meeting – March 2019 – Carbide Tools – Use and Techniques by Larry Maughn

March 21 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
WoodWorld, 13650 TI Blvd, Suite 101
Dallas, TX 75243 United States
Larry Maughan

The March 2019 demo will be on the use and techniques of carbide tools by Larry Maughan. Our demonstrator for March 2019 will be Larry Maughan on using carbide tipped turning tools – The Tools and Process. The demonstration will focus on evaluating and using various carbide tipped turning tools from different manufactures used on wood and acrylics.  In this demonstration you will see examples of creating basic shapes (beads, coves, hollowing, etc) along with the techniques used to minimize sanding.  The method of using carbide tipped tools can be somewhat different and this presentation will give you insights into some of your difficulties.  There will also be information supplied from manufactures along with free giveaways of tools and support products. Our presenter, Larry Maughan, has been working with wood since a youngster.  During the last several decades his focus has been on woodturning including pens, bowls, lidded boxes, spindles, goblets and platters.  He began using carbide tipped tools from the Easy Wood Tools Company soon after the company began in 2008.  He is a Certified Instructor and Product Demonstrator with EWT and has done turning demonstrations in many of the woodworking stores and clubs in the Dallas areas well as other states.  Larry is a member of the Dallas Area Woodturners’ Club and the North Texas Woodworkers Association.

Club Meeting – April 2019 – Pencil Box by Neil Brand

April 18 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
WoodWorld, 13650 TI Blvd, Suite 101
Dallas, TX 75243 United States
pencil shaped wooden box

The April 2019 demonstration will be Neil Brand demonstrating how to make a pencil box. I’ve been a member of Golden Triangle Woodturners for about 15 years and a member of Woodturners of North Texas and the AAW for almost as long.  I enjoy turning all sorts of things, but a box is one of my favorites.  In the August issue of the American Woodturner, Beth Ireland wrote a nice description of how to make a pencil box, a box that looks like a pencil.  Her techniques requires little more than the standard tools that essentially all woodturners own.  My plan is to demonstrate various ways to make a pencil box, including Beth’s techniques as well as a few other ideas.  In the process, I will talk about how a few additional tools can be helpful, although not necessary to make a pencil box.  Some of the additional tools are common woodworking tools such as the table saw and a rotary tool, but one is not so common. I’ll show how access to a 3D printer can be very helpful in making jigs and parts of the final product.
